Puppet animation

Thunderbirds

The system of Puppet animation uses thin wires to control marionettes, and is therefore also known as supermarionation (standing for super marionette animation). For example, "Thunderbirds", a TV series, which ran in the mid-1960s is probably the most famous puppet animation (Wikipedia 2005).

Pinscreen animation

Pinscreen animation such as "Night on Bald Mountain" (1934) was made by pressing pins on an upright board containing closely placed protruding pins, effectively creating shadow designs (The moving image genre-from guide 2005).

Pixilation

Pixilation utilises stop-motion technique, but using real actors. "The Wizard of Speed and Time" by Mike Jittlov (1989) is an example of this style.

Clay animation

Wallace & Gromit

The most popular clay animation is Aardman Animation's Wallace & Gromit adventure series since 1989 (Beck 2003).

Cut-out animation

Flying Circus and Python style

Python adapted Gilliam's surreal, collage stop-motion animation as the visual trademark for his comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969).
